Jane and Jacob
A gentle form of haunting, this
Kneeling in frozen slush
Before a tilted slate stone
Taking note of light and shadow
Waiting for the shutter click.
Her stone leans gently on the breast of his
Jacob Bradbury, died May 8, 1837
Jane P., wife of Jacob
Died October 2, 1863.
This is all I know.
That they were pledged to one another at some time.
That her stone reclines on his.
In this I discern passion and glory, tragedy and
struggle
Grief.
And finally,
Peace.
The deer are in velvet now
The earth in the flux of melt and freeze
That green wood doesn't throw off much heat
I hear the whispered sizzle of its green blood,
My tea grows cold too soon.
Forecast says
exercise caution on the highways
Fog is possible in the low-lying areas.
Snow will spread up to Caribou
Around midnight.
It will fall, becoming rain,
Over the shellfish flats
North of Princess Point.
