Jay Davis is the Bob Dylan of contemporary poetry. Subtle, brilliant, and impossible to ignore... makes the ridiculous sublime and the sublime ridiculous. The Hard Way is a triumph.
How to Know Everything
Concentrate only on the nonintuitive,
there's no reason to learn the rest.
Assume the lowest motives on the part
of others, and the highest of yourself.
You will often be wrong in this, but
rarely disappointed.
It usually takes less time to find out
you're wrong than that you're right.
You'll never learn why she loves you
and only possibly that she does.
Miracles change everything.
Randomness is unlikely.
The interested is retained longer though
it is also more likely to be misinterpreted.
You will always knows why she doesn't love you,
but rarely that she doesn't, and never when she doesn't.
Having knowledge does not preclude
not acting on it, in fact invites it.
History deceives consistently and retroactively.
Knowledge is safer to pursue in the present.
Fear changes the truth;
no other fact is this scary.
