by John McVeigh, author of BURNING CHAIRS
...These poems are all finely observed stories of lives lived in a small town in Maine. Whether humorous or sad, the poems combine to show a community that cares for all its individuals as individuals. The book follows a day in the town..but it also follows the rhythms of the year, and birth, love, living sleeping, aging and death, and through it all, charity.
by Anna Worbel, poet, historian
Jim McKenna's own kind heart rings out. He bears an inherent wish for each and all to find fulfillment, justice and love. The poets wishes to "weave you answers strong and thoughtful as a good cloak", and these poems land "as if pebbles down a well had struck gold bells."
Mother Sings
Why does Mother always sing?
"Younger than springtime am I.."
Snatches of songs we never knew
as she hurried to five children.
The reason she sang
was because when she heard
the beat of our shoes,
the bang of the door,
the brush of the broom,
the clang of the dishes
and the teapot’s whistle,
she naturally ran
to join the chorus.
