by Susan Donnelly, author of The Finding Day
This skillful and beautiful collection becomes an autobiography, in which David McCann evokes very different worlds, in the United States and Korea, and presents each so intimately that it feels like his home...McCann's drawings enhance the words he is definitely not "out of."
by Cynthia Brackett-Vincent, publisher, The Aurorean
The reader can see the influence Eastern poetry has had on McCann, whether in his sufficiently spare poems or in his haiku or sijo, whether his subject is a shoreline, a Zen garden, or an ancient temple. The poet is concise, yet his poems hold interest so that we want to read on--and on.
Early Spring in New Hampshire
Ground still damp, trees
starting to leaf,
we stood half circle,
casket and fresh mound of earth
at the center.
Blackflies swarming about us,
we could at least
wave them away.
Pastor’s glasses ran liquid,
assistant by his shoulder
ready with the bottle of spray.
We sang at last
the final hymn, careful
not to draw too deep a breath,
nor open too far
for Amen.
