...Both bracing and restorative, these poems defy forgetting. ...What is spilled is an honest accounting that looks at one's life from the end of childhood to the end of middle age, and looks ahead with a kind of resilience only achieved through remembering.
by Steven Riel, author of Edgemere
...The impact of Surette's metaphors can sneak up on a reader, as when a teacher is "fingerprinted" by fantasies or when a son discover the inadequacy of inherited objects.
Memorial Service
I recognized faces, remembered some names
from our punk rock days together,
but not the man approaching,
who I thought was reaching over for a handshake.
He handed me a card and said,
"I'm a second cousin
of the deceased. Isn't it a shame."
His card said Clown For Hire.
He wasn't joking:
Birthdays, Anniversaries, Kids, Adults.
"If you are looking for a clown, look no further,"
he said, and nodded like Frank Galvin
handing out his card at funerals
to drum up his lawyer business. But a clown?
He must have seen my eyes dim.
"I do magic too. I am a magician too,"
like that would matter. I looked around
for someone to witness this.
He was off to give more cards away.
I walked to the trash to chuck it, stopped,
and thought maybe, someday,
a clown will be just what I need.
