by Bruce Spang, poet, critic and teacher
Jay Davis holds humor and agony in a joyful tension. He celebrates his and our foibles. He makes paradox seem like someone you'd like to meet. In a voice distinct and original, he unravels the skeins of childhood, parenthood and adulthood without missing a stitch.
A Life of Science
Find a stream that flows by fast.
Place a rock in the middle of the flow.
Watch the water rise up over that lump,
Bubble and twist and boil around,
not changing direction, just energy level,
possibly noise...
Now, did you know you can do the same thing
at dinner, to the conversation ?
Try it !
Tell your wife how well your mother
cooked, and on such a limited budget.
Or how some palates are so peculiar
they must be regional--
you swear, it's instinctive,
or maybe genetic.
(These examples are ham-fisted by intent,
to keep the results of this experiment clear.)
Observe the waters rise and splash,
the current split and change intention.
Find another place to eat your supper.
If need be, go outside by the water.
Eat the rock.
Wash your hands and face in the stream.
