With frank intelligence, wit, an unmistakable sensuality and a profusion of language, RIFLES, RUMORS, GIN AND PRAYER takes you off the highway to stand under the streetlights of our commonality, and does so with humor, passion and a relentless truth.
by Peter Manuel
RIFLES, RUMORS, GIN AND PRAYER deservies to go as viral as Warren Zevon's hit "Lawyers, Guns and Money"...can a soul not be delighted by this necessary heresy? How can Jim's unbelieving street smarts, so copiously clever, have the faith to "change the things" one possibly can?
However Much My Bed
However much my bed
is a vehicle for sleep
I remain awake in it --
a thing
to occupy nightclothes,
to contemplate bare ceilings,
wooden floors worn with prayer
Insofar as the world
is a ward of metal bunks
lined up neatly and austerely
like thrift in a Protestant country
I remain awake in it --
fleeing its solemn proscription
pacing its man-made floors
