by Stuart Kestenbaum, Maine state poet laureate
In SAVING NAILS, Thomas R. Moore tells the stories he needs to tell with great precision. He is a poet who is concise, making every word and image count. Through his craft he carries the reader into his world and we see the necessity of looking at what is both around us and inside us. Whether it's kneeling in the garden, building a house, walking down a country road, or looking with tenderness into his past and his future, he slows time down so that we can see more deeply into the everyday.
PALIMPSEST
How immodest we are
for the deer-tick check,
surveying mysteries,
displaying imperfections.
Such stuff, we laugh,
is for the shower
or the dermatologist,
but we strip,
offering each other
our pocks and moles,
scars and protrusions,
thirty years after love’s
first shy scouting
expeditions.
