by Baron Wormser, former Maine Poet Laureate
The poems of John Willey speak to and from the heart of Maine. They cover a great skein of years and offer the consolations, regrets and insights that go with such a skein. The beauty of poetry is that the feelings don't fade and they certainly haven't in these poems.
by Peter Harris
The view from John Willey's beloved Eli's Hill takes in the natural world and leaves it steeped in love and gratitude. And when he leaves the Hill, his preferred mode of transportation is the kayak he built himself: modest, close to the water, and fit to cut a wave. His poems are that, too, Willey has a voice full of gentle wit, and care, and a piety so lightly held it feels as free as air. Travel with him and delight will be yours.
Why Are You Laughing So?
I didn't think about that--
All I said was
"In my next life I want to be
a French Canadian
Inuit baritone
zen Golden Retriever."
Oh, because to me
they all seem beautiful,
good-humored and
mysterious as dragonflies.
