Jim Donnelly, like all sensitive, intelligent souls, is burdened with the weight of acute observations. ..At heart, Jim is a jazz musician blending polyphonic melodies, treating 'words as if they mattered', exploring the space somewhere between Jesus driving the hypocrites out of the temple of truth and Mike Hammer on a cold night in a city that never sleeps.
From A Porch on Bailey Island
(for Judith and Charles)
A father and sons play kickball
framed by roofs and the sea
a chickadee bathes in the rain gutter
apples plunge from a nearby tree
a drowsy hornet examines your demeanor
an ant carries heavy cargo
the crows and their protestations...
an intoxicant blend
of woodsmoke and wildflowers
two passersby
on churchly retreat
argue the merits of heaven
